Phase 3 analysis: Ysearch 37 STR modal summary and analysis tables

Disclaimer

The clusters and topologies provided from this analysis are created as part of an analysis to investigate clustering within R1b haplotypes. No claim is made for their accuracy, nor for results calculated by their use. Specifically, many of the R1b clusters are likely to have very low confidence.

 

Overview

Many DNA genealogists use modal STR values and constantly refer to them. A modal value is the most common allele value for a “group” at a given locus. For this reason the phase 3 analysis had modal values calculated for the overall cluster defined groups and sub-clusters. Please note this is not a formal analysis, because identical haplotypes and those from closely related family members have not been removed. There are 278 identical haplotypes in the 3996 haplotypes analyzed most from members with the same surname. However, the results and tables do provide DNA genealogists with the ability to copy and paste selected modal haplotypes from this analysis into calculators like http://www.mymcgee.com/tools/yutility.html along with the haplotype of interest. This process quickly provides an indication where the new haplotype is likely to reside.  It also allows DNA genealogists who have defined a given modal haplotype for a group to compare it with the clusters presented here to find the approximate “contemporary”.

 

Traps for the unwary

·          The values for 389ii are less the allele values of 389i i.e. Genographic format.

·          For the genetic difference estimates:

§         Remember it is the time from the ancestor of a haplogroup to the ancestor of the other haplogroup NOT the time from the present.

§         For the more divergent haplogroups the STR markers are becoming saturated so will be underestimates
